Michael Lynn Hanes of Trenton passed away at Wright Memorial Hospital Saturday, April 20, 2019.
Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 p.m., Friday, April 26, 2019 at Resthaven Mortuary of Trenton. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Gardens. A visitation is scheduled from 7:00 until 8:00 Thursday evening at the funeral home. Memorial donations are suggested in lieu of flowers to the American Cancer Society for Thyroid Cancer Awareness, Breast Cancer Awareness, and Bladder Cancer Awareness or Children’s Mercy Hospital.
Mike was born March 16, 1959 the son of Bob and Theresa (Schell) Hanes in Trenton. He was baptized at Cat Creek Baptist Church and grew up on a farm on Route CC with his parents and three brothers. He was an active student at Gilman City High School where he held offices with the FFA and student council. After graduating in 1977, Mike worked on bridge crews and as a roofer for Melbourne Roofing. He later worked hauling lime for Whitney Trucking, for Modine Manufacturing and Columbia Insurance Co. He also owned and operated Mikes Quick stop Auto Shop before becoming a heavy equipment operator for Local Union 101. He could operate most any equipment. Mike was married to Rita Schreffler on March 31, 1979 at the Tenth Street Baptist Church. They recently celebrated 40 years of life together.
Surviving relatives include his wife Rita of the home, dear friend Arleen Peters, brothers Carl and wife Kendra, Jim and wife Tammy, Kevin and wife Penny. He considered his sister-in-law’s to be true sisters. Other relatives include mother in law Shirley Schreffler, brothers and sisters-in-law Tony and Freda Blevins, Jon and Lola Schreffler and Rick and Connie Tharp, nieces and nephews; Freddie Schreffler and Billie Birge, Nicholas Wilson and Lori, Jesse Tharp and Rachael, Blake Schreffler and April, Joe Wilson and Amie Curtis, Mindy Foster and Brian, Craig Hanes and Jessica, Colbi Kirk and Jeremy, Krista Clements and Caleb, Susan Allen and Levi, Adam Hanes and Lora, McKenzie Tharp and Kevin Votaw, Jentry Sprang and Aaron, Nic Hanes and Misty, great nieces and nephews; Raven and Riley Moveno, John Scheffler, Jack Schreffler, Chandler Anderson, Christian Wilson, Hudson Wilson, Noel Schreffler, Owen Schreffler, Aubrey Hanes, Carter Hanes, Axle Allen Roxy Allen, Elijah Wilson, Payton Hanes, Jaidrian Kasey, Haylee Hanes, Kameron Hanes, Ryeland Kirk, Mason Kirk, Zoey Hanes, Charlie Hanes, Ethan Hanes, Kylar Foster, Kaydan Foster, Aynsley Foster, Olivia Sprang, Carley Sprang, Riley Tharp, Nyla Tharp, Aza Birge and Roman Birge.
Those preceding him in death include his parents, father-in-law Fred Schreffler, a nephew James Wilson, good friends Terry Hobbs, Stanley Keuhn, and many others gone too soon.
Mike loved to visit with friends and family often dropping in and chatting with neighbors. He lived to fish, especially ice fishing with his friends Bill Fries, Mark Hanes, Curt Thorne, Larry Bunnell and Mike Figg. He loved to do fish fries and share fish with others and would package them ever so carefully. Mike was a very good mechanic and would fix about anything including air conditioners, small engines and autos. He also enjoyed his chainsaws and yard tools. He had a warm place in his heart for children, especially his nieces and nephews. Often at family gatherings he was the cause of much laughter and memories at the kids table. He often spoke of how proud he was of them.
